I am new to the DVD-A/SACD game, but what I have read the DVD-A is a better way to go. Can these players also read and play the old "CD" formats? Thanks

I wouldn't say DVD-A is the better way to go - both are the better way to go IMHO - that means a universal player. SACD has far more titles available than DVD-A and few DVD-A's are being produced in favor of DualDiscs - which can be problematic on some machines.
Yes, they can play redbook CD's - how well depends on the quality of the player.
