Subwoofer hum

Hello,
I recently added a subwoofer that I built myself with a 500W amp from partsexpress.com. The driver is a 15" Dayton, it's a passive sealed system. My receiver is a yamaha 5540. Here is the problem:
- when no sub connected to sub out of receiver, no hum.
- When sub out of receiver is connected to sub-amp (using a monster cable) I get hum in subwoofer as well as in main speakers.
- If subwoofer unplug still get hum in main speakers. I have tried to switch plugs outlets etc...
The only thing that worked so far was to plug my 3 prongs subwoofer pwoer cord to a 2 prong adapter. basically by passing the ground. I know that hum is a result of ground loop etc... I have no knowledge in electricity, but I know that what I did should only be a temporary solution. However, the hum was annoying and I don't know what else to do.
Please help,
thanks

Guillaume,
Using the cheater plug is typically the first recommended solution I have seen on this and other forums. I know of no reason not to continue using one. In fact, I am doing this myself.
