i picked up a Sony STR-DE697 Dolby Digital Receiver and I decided to buy a Sony SAWM500 Subwoofer. currently i am running sattelite speakers from an older system that i will sell when i get the speakers replaced with new ones. What centre speaker should i get for my system that would go with the subwoofer and be good for mostly movies and every now and then music

There's no need to match a sub to any other speaker. It only reproduces bass.

You should match your center speaker to whatever front speakers you will eventually get.

How much did you pay for the Sony receiver and sub? You can probably get much better for the same or just a little more money.

Sony makes great TVs and I love my Sony Clie PDA, but their audio is very spotty.

Eddie - Does someone pay you to be a killjoy? The guy didn't ask for your opinion of his receiver. Let him enjoy what he wants to own.

actually i didnt pay for the reciever, picked it up from work.
I see its listed at future shop and figured it was a good deal. The subwoofer i have not picked up yet, but for the price i liked that and the 12" sub and the reviews people have given it seem to be decent.

as for front speakers i was thinking bookshelf speakers, but not sure which ones because if i have a subwoofer already should i need go with the bookshelves with a sub?

This includes the sub? Is the price for the sub the C$400 I see on the FutureShop web page?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, you'd do better with a sub from Hsu than from Sony.

Here's guys have a Hsu STF-1 Demo available for C$289 (mint shape)

There's also the Canadian distributor who gave me a very good deal to ship my STF-3 (for C$20).

Charles,

Hallo there.

The front loudspeakers most be the same manufacture and the same model all three loudspeakers the same, got that and you will have one good sounding home cinema, from the front that is!

I use matching JBL control 5 for the three screen channels left centre and right and

For action effects
5 stars across the front

For music
5 stars across the front

For dialogue placed within the centre
5 stars

For dialogue panning across the fronts
5 stars

And all that with matching loudspeakers, there voicing, or timber matching will be spot on frequency response and range too will all make the differences as sound pressure level and power handing offering good dynamic range.

So the ball is your court?

If you what to mismatch and have a NAFF front sound stage, it's up to you, its up to you.

Charles,

> actually i didnt pay for the reciever, picked it up from work.

you mean you got them FREE? LOL, I have to agree that *is* hard to beat.

I was thinking that if you had spent $150-300 for a Sony receiver from Best Buy or someplace like that, you'd be much better off with a refurb Harman Kardon AVR-135 or 235 from Harman Direct on eBay.

A lot of newbies are susceptible to the "big name" hype of Sony just as they do for Bose, though Sony is still nowhere as overinflated and low-quality as Bose. Sony is known for not having a very good reliability history, though...just FYI.

But again, free is free! : )

PS. Charles, like Peter I'd also strongly advise AGAINST the Sony sub esp. considering the far superior quality you can get for the same or less money from Internet-only subwoofer specialists like Hsu and SVS.

Charles, with your last name, I'm pretty sure you're from Quebec, I'm going to upgrade my subwoofer pretty soon which means I'm going to sell my Klipsch RW-8, I know, it's not a beast or anything but I'm sure it could be a good deal for you. You could also come and try it if you'd like to... I'm selling it for 200$ CDN (Dumoulin was ready to take it back and give me 250$CDN for it if I was buying the Klipsh RW-12). Let me know if you're interested! Between, I know the HSU STF-1 would probably better but I'm still offering this to you!

no my last name is not french. If you notice the extra R in my last name it turns my last name into an english name from England :D

as for subwoofer i ended up buying a precision acoustics downward firing 12". I know its not anything fancy, but it kicks enough to shake my whole 3 story apartment building. It also came with a 9 year warranty. I figured nine years has to vouch for some kind of quality, otherwise they would be replacing these things alot.
