Hi! I'm a total newbie in the field of home theater. I'm in the market for a new receiver (meets my criteria of 6.1, under $300 and under 100watts). I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Onkyo 502 and the Pioneer 814K. Out of these two receivers, which one should I get?

Your comments and suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks!

That's a tough one. If you listen to music at least 50 percent of the time then an edge to the Pioneer. The Onkyo will be much easier to set up and more user friendly though.

For an extra $100 though you can find the Pioneer 1014 which would blow away both of them and you'll never look back and wonder if you should've spent just a little more...

Don't worry if the 1014 is a little over 100 watts, if that's the maximum your speakers can take they'll be fine as long as you don't overcrank the receiver---and the speakers will give you plenty of warning when they're nearing their breaking point.
