I just purchased a new Panasonic Plasma HDTV, which required a progressive scan DVD player for best picture quality.

Can I connect my new progressive DVD player to a 2-year-old Pioneer surround sound DVD player/receiver and still get true 5.1 output, via the red/black RCA wires? or digital audio coax connectors?

When I switch to Aux or TV mode, the Pioneer receiver does not seem to recognize 5.1?

You should be able to output 5.1 using the digital coax. Make sure, in the options for the disc you are watching, you turn on surround sound. Many discs default to stereo.
