Do sub enclosures need air?

ok, so I got a pair of "thump" 6 inch subs in enclosures and on top theres an air hole and a tweeter. Since I only use them for my lows I dont need the tweeter. When I put my hand over the tweeter hole and air hole it seems to have better bass and lessinternal rattling like it has otherwise. The question I am wondering about is, do sub or speaker enclosures need air vents for the air to escape or would it do any harm to the sound of the sub to close off all holes in the enclosure so that its airtight and maybe sound more solid.

~love yall, God bless.

that would just make it a sealed enclosure, one of the most common boxes.
