my sub calls for a 4"x8" round port, I know that the area of the opening hsa to be 12.57sq in.
But do I still make the slot port 8" long? or does it have to be converted too?

the port surface area has to be the same, what you need to do is calculate the surface area of the round port and make a slot port with equal amount of surface area

If it's 8" long as a round port, needs to be 8" long as a slot port.

ok, the slot port should be 12.57 sq.in. and 8 in. long.
my box is going to 28x14 3/4x14 3/4.
what ratio should I use for the H and W of the port?

try to keep the vent wider than 1.5"...that way you have less chance of noise.

but if that my calculations are correct then your bow is bout 3 cuft, right?
if so you may wanna think about a larger area port, you would have to recalculate the port length though, but it may sound better.

Its 2.5 cuft.
I was thinking of going about 2" wide on the port, but i wanted the port to go all the way across the box,14-3/4" not 28". but i guess that i cant.
