I need a box that's about...1 cu ft sealed or 2 ported. I'd like a ported box, but meh. 3/4 MDF is the lowest I'll stoop.

lookin to spend <$40

I like the look of a bandpass box, but do they sound as good?

Your gonna have to spend more then 40.00 if you dont build it yourself and want a good quality box. I would take a look at http://www.proboxrocks.com. They are made out of 5/8 mdf but are very solid boxes. Thats what I would do or build your own.

their boxes are in your range
bandpass is loud. that's all. they mask distortion which is nice, but they don't hit that deep, hence the name.
they are also about 1.5X larger than a sealed box.

go ported @ 35Hz for loud and deep, go sealed for accurate and deep but not as loud.

I was hoping you'd respond, Glass. I'm not sure I trust the advice of some of the other people here after reading around. No offense Davids-with 270+ posts you most likely aren't a moron.

I've looked at BigDog on EBay a bit. I found some boxes, but none of them are ported. I'll try their website though-thanks Glass.

Here's the one I'm thinking of ordering. Not ported like I wanted, but I guess it'll have to do. Maybe I'll check out proboxes first to see if they have a ported one...

ROFL!!!!!! $250 for that BestBuy POS? Its not worth half that. If you looking for an awsome prefab box in that price range, check out.... http://www.powered4sound.com/ Oh, and powered4sound doesnt make "tuned high to sound loud" prefabs either, these are custom built TL designs made specifically for the sub your going to use in it.

4cu ft for two twelves is what you need for a ported box.
it's large but it fits in most cars easily enough.

if you're looking at that bigdog site, look at the slot vented box for the two 12" comp VR subs.
that's what ya want. that thing should hit nice and hard.

I don't have two subs >_<. If you can find me a single vented box, that has 2 cubic feet of airspace, that'd rock! I've got a box now, but its like .7 cu ft--no good.

They've got single boxes but, unless I'm blind, none of them are ported.

not too many car sub boxes are ported because they require more cubes of enclosure space to sound good and with a small sealed you get the BOOM!!! that you here all the time small sealed=very boomy

Hey Ed, you must have "A Really Big Shoeeeeee" stuck up your @$$ or something. Ported boxes are far louder than a sealed box. Also, many boxes are ported. Furthermore, why would you want a sound that "you here all the time"? Why not be unique?

ported will be about +3dB louder than sealed, but close to twice the net volume as well.
if the box is sealed and boomy, this is caused by poor box design, being too large, or an issue caused by a poor crossover design being set too high, or designed improperly for compensating with cabin gain. This is all correctable though.
sealed will play lower, but it's a flat response and doesn't have the punch of a ported box at it's tuned frequency.
the sealed box also has a poorer transient response due to the suspension of the sealed enclosure.

if you've got some common tools handy like a jigsaw, and a cordless drill/driver gun you could pretty much build a box if you wanted to.
$18 sheet of 3/4" MDF, and a couple feet of 4" ID PVC tube from home depot. a thing of liquid nails and a box of drywall screws. oh, and some clear caulking.
that'd just about do it.

Will the acoustics of the box work right if done as you say, Glass?

~if you build it, they will thump~

er, I mean if you build the box right, it'll work great.

So what're you suggesting, that I'm incapable of building a box that will work? *sarcasm*

Right. Sooo...I think I'll go to HD tomorrow

Shopping List:
1" MDF. Open to suggestions
2 Cans Liquid nails.
Some carpet.
PVC piping? Won't that be too thick to make my ports out of?

I've got an air compressor/nail gun. 2 DeWalt drills-1 being an 18v hammer drill-, a jiggy, a circular, a scroll, a tile saw...more saws than I can see (hehe lil joke)...and more hand tools than you can shake a stick at. Anything else?

You forgot the clear caulking. Also get 3/4". You can go 1" if you want but it really is necessary. Good Luck
