I was planning on building a 4 cubic foot box tuned to around 30hz for my 12w7. I've heard that if you build a box too much bigger than manufactures recommendation it may be damaging. But JL recommends 1.75 and that seems way to small. Any input?

If you go too big it will make your output alot less too id say go 2.25 tops

Ok thanks guys, think I'll do the 2.25 and what do you guys recomend as a frequency that will hit the low notes but no sacrifice too much output?

the 2.25 is after sub displacement and port displacement

So I'm using WinISD (not sure if you have used it but if u have,) and when i would put 2.5 for the cubic feet, does that take into count the driver and port volume? And u say 2.5 Cubic feet before driver displacement and port?

when you use winisd type in 2.25 cf but build it to 2.50 to account for port and sub....use aero ports

the aero ports take up less room and flow alot of air for their size

and put them lenght-wase in the box, so if the sub was facing the trunk, the ports would be going out the left? And side by side?

you can put them in the front or the side but try to give the ports at least 3 inches of breathing room from the wall inside the box

Ok so i'll be doing this friday already, ha ha, and just so i got this right.

- 2.5 cubic feet w/o port and driver displacement
- Im going to mount them by each other on the left side due to it giving them the most breathing room
- And that should give me around 32hz?

Again I can't thank you enough

Would would be the best position for the 2 aero ports? side by side? or across from each other?

That's a little bigger than I would go because you lose a bit of that tightness and snap that the w7 is so great at. Maybe like 2.1-2.2ish. But 2.5 minus displacement will be pretty close.

Say what you will about JL and their prices etc., but nobody here that has heard one, can deny that the 12W7 is one great SQ sub that can knock in the right config.

Finally finished the box and decided to go slot port to save money. This was my first ever box build and the only woodworking tool i had was a jigsaw haha. Comments welcome and the sound quality and low end is hugely improved from a smaller box Ultimate Electronics built. 2.5 cubic feet (not including port) tuned to 31 hz
