hello everyone again, I was just wondering what makes a custom box so much better than a prefab. Please do not make fun of me ha. I know its hard but dont. If you tell me once most of the time i will remember. I am trying to decide whether to build my own, hire someone to build one, or to just buy a prefab. Please give me your thoughts.

The main problem with prefabs is that they are only made to fit. Fit just about any car and just about any sub. Just get it in there and be loud, without regard to the subwoofer's response or the velocity of the air as it exits the port. Both have a tremendous impact on the sound quality and quantity. In most cases, the tuning frequency is too high. That way, it will sound "louder". It also helps to keep the port area and length down. This will make the box smaller, to fit in more vehicles. But, you will lose a lot of low bass extension.

with custom boxes, you build them to the specs of the sub(s). Every company lists what is their subs recommended enclosure cuft volume so that you should match that. When built to the specs of the sub it will perform at its optimal level

as far as boxes, my company could build you one or you could try to build your own. Up to you.

Bassman3,

I have to disagree w/ you bud.
Most prebuilts are infact built to fit, but not in cars. They are built to fit on a shipping pallet. MANY manu's build just to fit as many boxes as they can on a pallet so they can ship em out. Its sad.

Jordan,
Get a box built or build one. You will be FAR happier w/ your system.

Yeah. Building my own is gonna be a little more complicated and time consuming. How much do you think i am looking at paying for this. O and the sub is an alpine type r" 15 dual 4 ohm. I would like a ported box.

Building your own should not cost over $50 for supplies... assuming you have the tools. It is not hard and there are plenty of websites that give designs for free.

Chances are you will have a (quality and aesthetically) better box if you get it built for you, but that comes at a cost.

There are 2 main problems with prefabs...

1) Bad quality materials. You can avoid this if you get one made of 3/4 mdf though.

2) Wrong airspace/tuning for the sub. This is mainly a problem with ported boxes. They are almost all built wrong.

If you are using a sealed box, prefab is just fine if its built well and is correct size. Ported boxes need to be custom made.

Dont forget lots of prefab companies only use staples and no screws and some do not use quality glue or even none at all.

The you also got the leaky terminal.

With a sealed box you do not want to be able to push the subwoofer down and hear the air leak out or suck back in. A sealed box should be as its name SEALED. It needs that compression

Most people do not use sealed boxes due to the fact most ported are louder.

I had six 15" sonance in a sealed box about a year ago and it hit very good and sounded excellent.

With Sealed boxes you can only get louder with A- adding cone area B- adding power
