HD3 vs BTL

Sorry, I know this is the third thread I've started like this, but I can promise if I find a resolution from this one I will be done posting these threads!

On to the topic, BTL vs HD3... I'm in a pickle I'm looking for a high SPL sub with some crisp bass. I understand the SQ won't be great on etiher sub (or so i assume) but can anyone give me a rating on each sub in SPL and SQ. Either sub I get will be a Dual 2 ohm 15" model. It will be housed in a 4.5 cu. ft. box tuned at 33 hz. What can I get loudest, lowest, and cleanest with?

It will be powered by a Hifonics BXI1500. I don't wanna hear that i will be underpowering it. I know that, but I've talked to Scott and DJ both telling me that both subs will get obnoxiously loud with very little power (less than I would be giving it). Scott told me about a guy taking home first place in a competition with 900 watts to his fully loaded BTL. DJ said the Audioque will pump out more bass then he would want with only 800 watts put to it.

Can anyone give me some help here, it is stritly between these two subs. I appreciate everyone's opinion, but I want either the Fi or the Audioque.

Thannks in advance for the input I recieve!

I thought the HD3 subs were designed to be more on the SPL side?

Yeah I'm thinkin i might go with the Fi if the reviews from chad and dr smith are both pretty equal because it looks better haha (sissy I know) but hey who cares if it looks and sounds good. Plus i know a bit about RE subs and since scott used to build those I know the Fis will be good. I do love the magnet on those HD3s though

The HD3 was never designed as an SPL sub. It was designed as an extreme duty daily driver. More of a very "beefed up" sql driver. Soundquality vs SPL of the HD3 is determined more by box tuning. The design of the HD3 also lends itself to work very well in SPL applications.

problem with the FI, there is no warranty, the BTL is not covered by FI because they know what people plan on doing with them, if you dont beleive me go to there website and read the ENTIRE warranty section

Yeah, highly doubtful that i would abuse it but it makesyou think of the quality considering theres not like a warranty void (like JL) so maybe the sub isnt made so well

no im sure its made like a tank lol, just scott knows people are going to be burping them like crazy trying to get the most out of them and cant afford to fix every BTL that was blown with thousands of watts over its limit

WOW, the BTL doesn't have a warranty?

I know many companies don't offer warranties if you compete in SPL comps with their products, but I am surprised their isn't a warranty on the BTL's for people who just use them in daily setups.

BTL:-)

it may not have a warranty, but i know Scott would take care of it if you had any problems that didn't warrant the Dumbazz Award.:-)

The HD looks awesome, but i would want to try the BTL....and it just looks soooo sexxy:-)

Anyone know which has more output?

My guess would be the HD3, but it would be cool to see some tests done at different amounts of power.

my btl weighs in at healthy 67lbs each. it will have triple stack magnets and extra long vc for higher excursion. what more can you ask from a subwoofer.

i should have it in less than a week but i still have to wait for a box. 2 weeks until my review.

In my opinion, if you are tuned at 33 hertz the BTL will deliver. ( the high xmax coil and 3rd magnet with the cooling ) heck, go here ( www.stevemeadedesigns.com ) I think steve has got a single t 4000 amp to each 18" btl and they don't stink at all. ( based on application ) he's tuned DEEP as well. For the price they offer and the performance... "you can't go wrong" hope this helps... have fun!

Yep, war....We'll, I know I can send my subwoofers back and have them modify it also, but I'll just wait until I can afford to bump up the amps as well. =).

3rd mag and high xmax coil allows for more linerity, anything getting ridiculous like 3000 watts get the cooling. the chamfer allows for smooth air flow around the coil.(allows for relief of pressure under the dust cap as well.) this sub will take 1400 watts no problem...

well i know that but i didnt think i would need a buncha extras with onyl 1400 watts i guess ill throw on at least the high xmax coil and chamfer i dunno about the 3rd magnet

scott said the "3rd magnet is normally used as a spacer for the longer high xmax coil. While it does add a small amount of motor strength, it is nothing major and only seems to truly help in reducing flux compression in very high current coil/power applications."

"With only a BX1500, I would only add the pole chamfer for $10. It would offer the best cost to benefit ratio with a lower powered application."

I was gonna add the high xmax anyways, but from the words of scott i dont need to spend the 40 extra, but I will if i have the money
