I was told if my alternator is not putting out enough power the amp does that.. is that true?

Have you tried to power the unit without anything connected to it (other than power of course). The unit should power up no problem, regardless of alternator. Just at idle a good working unit shouldn't pull over 2-3 amps.

If you still get the fault with just the amp powered up, then you have an amp problem. If not, start connecting everything back up one device at a time until the problem returns.

This will help you figure your problem out.

Also, make sure to check your wiring. Especially your ground.

Definitely sounds like a grounding issue- even with your engine not running the alternator this would not be a problem. Try running a new ground wire (even if just temporary) to see if it solves your problem.
