Does it matter where the port is put in the box as long as it is the correct length and diameter for the tunning frequency. And how am i sopused to decide what size port to use.

yes position will matter, and you can calculate length using the calculators on the12volt.com and bcae1.com

for port diameter, for 8" and 10" subs, 3" port
for 12" subs use a 4" port
for 15" and lager, stick to 6" ports
those are minimum diameters to avoid port whistle

put the port on the same side as the sub, or in an adjascent, perpendicular side of the box.

example, if the sub fires forward, the port goes in the face with teh sub, or the top at a 90deg angle to the sub

how hard would it be to make an elbow or L with your port to make it go up and aim the same way as your sub? Because i have a hatch and i wanted to face the ports up with the subs facing up also.

you could go with a slot-vent then you can fold the port numerous times if necessary.
