Guys how do you know if your amp is going to blow your subs?

Hey guys just thought this would be a good tread to start so pepole can learn how not to blow there subs As i had to learn the hard way
So what are some warnings of possibly running your subs?

smell of burning Voice coils is a pretty good sign. tinsel lead slap, over excursion is another sign of causing damage.

You've turned your gain way up.
Gain is not a sub's volume knob.

Just thought I'd mention, there's another thread about blowing subs as well...Odd thing is I posted nearly the exact same thing as James but read his after typing mine O.o
