My son want's subs. He's eyeing this Kicker package for 10" L5's:
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_5534.html

The price seems great and fits what I want to spend, $350ish. Going in a bigger SUV. Would think he wants loudness but sound quality is important too. Reactions? Alternatives? He'll have to buy the amp. If this is a good package any recommendations for a quality amp to pair with this? I really apppreciate your help!

you can get this for about 50 cheaper, in ebay using a seller indoaudio. That other store will not replace/warranty blown speakers, the box is 60 and the subs are 240.

That box looks alright for a 1st subwoofer. For amps- JL, Orion, JBL and many others are all nice. You should look for an amp that can put out 800-1000w @1ohm for best result. A used JBL 1200.1 would be my choice prolly.

Found one with a Buy it Now option for 290$ and another with a resrve of 125$.

Heres links to those JBL amps @ ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/JBL-GTO1201-1-1200-WATT-MONOBLOCK-AMPLIFIER-NEW-04-AMP_W0QQi temZ5840361015QQcategoryZ18797QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

i think these would be a better deal comparable to the L5's but in a ported enclosure which would make the set up louder, those L5's were not ported.

Why didn't somebody question putting 2 10s in a big SUV ? - unless he needs the space !?

if he wants 10s he could get 2 Alpine type Rs for around $100 or less each & still have to get a prefab box cheap .......

Especially being you said sound quality is important. That is pretty mucb non-existing with the L5s. Type Rs are a great all around sub. Far as the amp goes, you'd be in the same boat, 500RMS to each. Could get 1 RESX18" for $265.. build a monster box to specs.. be quite a good choice. Can't go wrong with the Type Rs if your just going to get a prefab box though.

Mike you are not a good father if you dont buy him TWo 12 inch type R's an atleast a solid 1000RMS amp, you cant tease him with the subs then make him go out an find his own amp, a good father would buy the amp an the subs but tell him hes on his own with the boxes an wires an what not

mike is a great dad supporting his son on what he likes
there a few of my friends that get over 150$ of stuff from there parents for the holidays
cadillac maybe your tryin to help the kid out but dont put the dad down hes going way out of his way asking on forums and wat not to get his son some quality stuff

my opinion
i would get a 18" SX and you and your son build a box for it ... spend a little father son time together

But yes the guys a good father, i dont know many fathers that would buy theyre sons, 'annoying boom boxes' which is what most people over 30 see large expensive stereo systems as .. i dont even know many fathers that will do much more then buy you a starter for ur car because urs went out an ur strapped for cash

Matbe thats y he's getting his son 10s instead of 12s or 15s so that he won't annoy the heck outta him while both of them are in the car - lol

Mike Forsberg :
a pair of 12" 1242d Alpine type R even in a sealed box powered by a good amp like RF 10001bd amp for ex would be a very decent setup that u can find on ebay 4 cheap .
I do own a pair of those subs so i'm rec it based on experience - sounds really nice/clean & loud too ......

you can probably get 2 of those subs for like 275 after shipping but that amp is going to be a little over 400 bucks so thats out of his price range

Even if he went with Hifonics it would cost him 200 for an amp with enough power so it would still be about 125 over what he wants to spend
