An alternator is for power when your car is running, a battery is for when your car is off. A capacitor filters out ripples in the power. A capacitor doesn't actually supply power of its own. If you're dimming and are lacking power, a capacitor will not help, only make the power problem worse. You'll need an alternator if you plan on playing loudly while your car is on, and you'll need battery(s) if you play a lot with your car off.

Mikechec, do You think I will notice a bigger difference if I Upgrade from 4 gauge wiring to 0/1 gauge wiring, or if i get a 200 Amp alternator? (my stock alt. is 140) I have an RE 12.1 amp, and an alpine MRV-F340 amp. I have 4G going from the battery to the RE amp.

Basically If i get 0/1 guage wiring, and upgrade my grounds or "the big three" will it be more benifical than leaving things how they are, and getting the HO alternator???

Mike: If you get a HO alternator, you're going to want to upgrade your big three wires WITH that. You're pulling a good amount of current so you probably should upgrade the alternator, big three, and get probably 2 gauge for the RE amp.

Justin: Check out this link as to what a capacitor does. http://wickedcases.com/caraudio/capacitors.html
Also notice the following:
A capacitor will NOT:
Replace the need for a larger, high-output alternator and/or a deep-cycle battery or batteries.
