Quick Ohm Question

Do the Ohm's on the subs have to directly match the Ohm's on the amp. For example if i have A Mono 4ohm Amp and two 2ohm/8ohm (either or) subs can i still hook it up as 4 0hm? (I was told it is best to run on 4Ohm)
