Which setup has better SQ bass? Which will reach higher SPL? Obviously 2x12s will go fractionally lower but will 3x10s be harder, tighter and faster?
I use Infinity VQs as the moment and want to go with one of these setups in my boot.

it really depends on the subs and the install 10's might have tighter sounding bass. but they may not be louder.

it has somewhat to do with the surface area of the sub and how the sub is made for loudness i believe so if u find the total surface area of the 3 10's and the 2 12's u should have a good guess at which is gona be louder but if there 2 different brands it can be totally different

It all depends on surface area, and how much excursion you're going to be getting. If you have a set amount of power, then you need to look specifically at that. If you're comparing two 12" RE MTs with full power to three 10" Sonys, then we all know who'll win :P.
