Question: Subwoofer bottoming out? Or hitting hard?

Ok, im setting my gains and everything, and what i want to know is this. How will i be able to tell the difference between the sub just hitting real hard and making a thud...as say, compared to the amp sending a clipped signal and the sub slamming or bottoming out
It's an alpine type r 12 inch just to let you guys know
If the amp is clipping, you more than likely won't be able to hear it. If the sub is bottoming out, it will sound like when you stick you're hand infrunt of the sub, letting the cone slap you're fingers.... hope that made sense.
