I'm seeing a lot of people buying the XXX in the 18" version across the internet. If put in a sealed box, and powered right, does it remain musical even though its an 18" sub?

sure its muusical.. you just need to give it a LTO of power so the massive motor can control all of that cone mass properly.
that's all

I'm using two RE XXX 12" in a sealed aperiodic enclosure myself, with ~1300 watts to each sub from dedicated amplifiers

It'll be worth the wait.

Yea, I hope so...I've only heard good things about it. The wait gives me time to start building custom.
