why are they louder. does the port make it where the sub is pushing twice as much air or is it something else?

A ported box normally shows a 3db increase around the ports tuning freq. You acheive this increase by alowing the wave length from both sides of the sub to be heard.

In other words both sides of the sub are working for you, were as a sealed box you only hear one side of the sub.

Before you ask, yes you need a box. The box restricts the movement of the speaker, even in a ported enclosure.
