A friend of mine is having problems with a MTX amp in his car. Max volume on the HU is 40, When he puts it at like 27 the amp stops giving output, But still remains on, If you put the volume down a couple the sub will come back on. I tried two different grounds and still the same problem. What could be wrong?

Check your gain/level control. It might be set too high. Also check bass boost control too.

Alright, I had a feeling it had something to do with the gain. I think he had it set at max but not sure. Was set high though.

What speaker? How many ohms is the speaker? Is it DVC? I think you are overloading the amp. The amp is 2 ohm stable.

Its a DVC 4 ohm sub. I ran the amp in my car for awhile and it worked in mine. But not his.

What is the preout voltage on his HU? The average is 4v. Maybe his is higher? Start with the gain at minimum and go slowly up. See at what volume level it shuts down with minimum setting.
Are you using rca or speaker level input?

Hes useing RCA. Not sure of the voltage on the HU though. Its a KOSS headunit so its mostlikely average. I'll try that with the gain though.

The amp can handle 8v pre-outs. It sounds like the amp has problems.
