Problems using 8 ga. instead of 4 ga.?

will it just limit the power the amp can put out?

The amp will try to draw it's needed current, and if you push the limitations then the wire won't deliver what the amp needs, resulting in sagging rails on the amp, which causes clipping and overheating of the amp. Another big problem is that the wire will heat up, and possibly melt the insulation around the wire. As you can guess, that can end up in a dead short and things could get nasty.
