Crossovers, Adjustable Gain Controllers

I am fairly new car audio. I have a friend that wired an adjustable gain knob to his system and works perfect to adjust the amount of bass getting to his speakers. I have an older truck that I recently started to fix up. I am putting a pair of Pyramid 300watt 6.5" subs in the door powered by a Kenwood Hi-Power 45Wx4 CD-player. I was wondering how I could hook an adjustable gain knob up to this system. Also, to get a little more power to the subs, can I just use a crossover or do I have to buy an amp? Another question, the speakers I replaced with those Pyramids were Kenwood 120W 2-way speakers than still work fairly good. How can I hook them up to work along with the subs, do I have to use them as rear channel ( My CDplayer has two jacks for this), or do I have to purchase a crossover for this. Please help!!! please email all correspondence to tyler03@email.com Thank you..
Sincerely,
Tyler
