alright i was replying to a thread on ROE, and this guy was telling me that alternators put out 125% of their advertised amperage and sometimes more. i argued with him and told him it sounded like BS but he swares to it. hes a vet over on ROE. anyway can any of the electrical system guru's provide insight on this subject?? M.S., RR, wolfman??

meade's 300a alts i believe benched at maybe 320 or 325+ ...i would say in some cases they could do a lil over they're rated power...but idk bout all the time. Maybe he's just thinkin if you rev the engine up alot that you'll get more power from the alt and itll keep increasing....idk.

This is true, but as the temperature goes up so does resistance and power loss. Polo.

I've never actually tested an HO alternator, but that sounds entirely possible. It may even depend on the brand/quality of the alternator.

Also, alternators are rated for a certain amount of power AT a certain RPM for driving and for idle.

plus not all more than 125% the rated power, it is imposible. just saying that statistically speaking this is imposible.... lol that statistics class opened my eyes. lol

Steve got his from Iraggi

most places that test alts do it at like 2k-2.5k rpm...so thats prolly wehre they rated at...lets say u was at 2.5k+ tho, I think that may make the output go up...not positive. Kinda like some amps are rated at 12v..but if u run em at 14.4v u get more power. Thats the way im lookin at it, if that makes sense to anyone else.

why:

125% of the rated power is 1.25 times the rated power. That is not impossible.

It is intirely possible. These measurements are temperature dependant. It is a proven fact that as an alternater generates heat it loses power this is well known. Manufactures try to compensate for this by adding a little extra to offset this. Remember this when summer gets here. Polo..

that makes sense. i have heard that a lot of HO alts put out about the same amperage as stock alts at idling speed. could definatley be wrong tho.

^^^^ that is false. What do you think the "idle amperage rating" is?

yea on Iraggis it is 100 on the models for my car even on the 300 amp model. and i believe my idle amp rating on my alt in my car is 100 also tho. i could be wrong and i am getting off topic anyway
