Tuning 3 cu. ft. box for max SPL???

i wanna get the most SPL i can out of my sub!

i am building a 3cuft box w/ a changable port so that i can go from SPL tuning to SQ tuning. for the SQ port i'm gonna use a 4 in pvc pipe and tune to ~30hz, so i can hit the lower notes.

but i'm in a fix about where to tune for SPL!!!

i've heard that if you tune the box so the sub will peak out (spl wise that is) at a frequency that has a wavelength that is 4 times the distance from the sub to the mic, then you will get your best SPL....is this true???

should i tune to the frequency that has just such a wavelength?

by the way...it will be easy for me to change the ports, just a matter of unbolting one and putting another in! any suggestions on what frequency i should tune to???
