diamond4151 Unregistered guest | I don't know if this will work for everyone but it's worth a try. I have the Philips CDR-775, the innerworkings of this model and other relesed before and after this one IE; CDR-785 3+1, CDR-765, and others around the same years, 1999,2000,2001. It would be my guess that the same technology was used for the recording part. I have too run in to the "Can't find Blank Media" for my CDR-775. First let me say that I don't have anything against Best Buy, I buy most,if not all of my products there, the staff sometimes are less to be desired. If the question asked to any and I mean any of the sales/floor staff about what is compatable for the Philips machines, they really don't know!!! At least in my stores around me. They are mostly kids who work part time for the cash. Here's my fix for you that have the same problem. If it is possible for you to be able to get 1 or 2 disc of the Memorex CDRW(74 min/650MB)you should have no problem recording and finalizing. Once you have done that, if you have a PC with a CD-Rom and a CD-Recorder/DVD-Recorder, a copying program and the regular type CD-R's for a computer, you can make cd's for your listening pleasure. I do admit it seems like a lot of work and more steps than needed, but it will work. I simply record what I want onto the CDRW, finalize it, put it into my PC open my copying program, put any blank disc in the recorder and hit copy to CD-R and presto! I have a cd that will play in anything. The best thing about the CDRW is you can un-finalize it and erase it! You can start all over again. If anybody had the capability to do it this way, you should have no problems any more. I know it sounds long and tedious. Just try it if you can. Unfortunitly the worst case is that the laser is out of alingment. If that is it, it would be better just to buy a new machine at that point. In most, however, the "OPC ERROR" means that the machine dose not reconize the blank media that you have put in it. It does NOT mean you have a miss-alinment with the laser. I hope this will help any who read this, keep in mind though that this is what worked for me, it may NOT work for everyone. Good Luck and Happy Recording. |

New member Username: DoorzPost Number: 2 Registered: Mar-06 | (I already put this somewhere else, but is seems to me this information is best placed here) Hello, I own a Philips CDR 760, which i have modified using the Modchip mentioned earlier in this thread, it was fairly easy to install, you only needed to solder on a few wires according to the instructions on their site. It is now able to record on computer CDR's, but it seems to me that without a firmware upgrade (which will probably never happen anyway) sooner or later there will no more discs which are compatible. I have used the old Fuji Audio rewritable 74min for a long time (actually till they gave out because of scratches), i also used the Maxell CDRWXG 80 minutes, until now the most reliable disc. This recorder only uses the 1-4x speed computer CDRW's (the audio version always was 1-2 speed), which means that nowadays the choice even for computer CDR's is quite small, so it it questionable if it is still worthwhile to modify the recorder today. anyway, just to satisfy the curious, i can use standard Maxell CR-R 80 52x, Sony CD-RW 700mb/80min multispeed 1-2-4x, Acer 1-2-4x 650mb/74 min, T'n B 4x max 650mb. I also have tried the TDK 1-4 CDRW's but these seem to be borderline (OCR sometimes fails), same thing with Memorex 700MB/4X CDRW's, some discs work perfectly, others not at all. nowadays the Sony 1-4x CDRW are the best choice (always keeping in mind that my recorder has been modified) btw i use the same method as diamond4151 - i record my vinyl on CDRW, copy it to my PC and eliminate editing errors and scratches and copy back to a standard CD-R. |

My older Philips 785 also gave out and was no longer compatible with Mitsui's process and I got a Sony CD recorder which is a wonderful machine. I'm back in CDR heaven now. |

This is now July 2007, and I just bought a 75 pack of Music-CDRs at Costco, 80min, 700MB, TDK brand. The machine acts a little funny when burning from analog (vinyl) and doesn't show the correct track (doing the second side of an LP it stays on track 1 in display) and starts the time left at 80 mins again, until you play the disk and allow an update. Other than that, they work dandy! I pushed "Finalize" and the disk is just fine. I DO prefer to burn onto a CDRW first though, because if I miss the end of the vinyl groove, and the disk just recorded 10 minutes of quiet, or popping static, I can erase it and start fresh - then I simply copy the beast to a CDR for the final version. That saves me getting a lot of coasters out of the machine  |

My previous RCA deck had a nice little feature that let you boost or cut the input strength. Right now I'm recording things okay, but I'm running into problems when I try to play them in other systems (such as a Philips bookshelf system at work), because I have to max out the volume to get anything close to a normal playback level. |

New member Username: LaprathoPost Number: 2 Registered: Jul-07 | As to what to do to record on your CDR-785, when you see the "FINALIZED CD" prompt: If the CD you are trying to use is a plain CD-R, you are done if there is already music or data on it. Nothing else can be recorded, because it is a one time recording medium. If what you are using is a MUSIC CD-RW (rewritable), and you get the finalized CD warning, do this: Wait , until you get the "UNFINALIZE?" prompt. This takes a few seconds, maybe 5 or so - seems like an eternity when you wait for it ;) Your selector wheel on the far right has a "NO" button to its left, and a "YES" button on the right. If you get the "UNFINALIZE?" prompt, the "YES" button will be lit. Push it. The countdown begins and the disk is wiped while you see "UNFINAL" on the display. When it is done, you can select your recording source and record again. Since there are several CD recording modes and the CDR 785 is a fairly complex beast to operate and get used to (it took me a few hours to go through all the options at the time, and I am computer nerd by profession!), getting CD-RW disks is the ONLY way to go without burning a whole bunch of coasters However, this machine is worth every minute of effort, because it is really capable of audiophile quality recordings from analog sources. I have dropped jaws of my friends in our little afternoon listening session in my pal's HiFi and vinyl store, and the recordings were made using the CDR 785, a Dual 1242 or a Dual 510 (have a collection of Duals, but those are my favs for playing) fitted with a home made custom matt and an Audio Technica OC-9 moving coil cartridge fed into a Music Hall MMF-Phono-Pack plugged directly into the CDR-785. Sonic bliss! BTW: I have been using the same two Sony 74 minute CD-RW disks of type CWM74 since I bought my CDR 785 brand new in 2001, and they still work! Since I practically do exclusively analog vinyl burns, I had too many coasters in the early days. The first two days that is! I early on burned to CD-RW first, then just used the CD->CD mode to copy the finished disk after I was happy with the results on the CD-RW - that really works! |

I finally wore those out and the only music CD-RWs I could find were TDK Music CD-RW80s that I got from Amazon. When I first tried them the 785 didn't recognize them. So I got a Maxell CD-R80 and burned all 79:57 minutes of it and used the cdburner on my computer to copy it to a TDK CD-RW disc. Then I took the TDK CD-RW disc and erased it in the Philips deck. That somehow prompted the Philips tp recognize the TDK discs and now they work fine. I am burning and erasing and re-burning with no problem. I hope I was clear in explaining how I did this. |

I have started to check the power supply board, and I am not getting any output from the board. When I plug mains into the unit I hear a slight electrical arcing crack, and I have checked that mains is actually getting onto the PSU board. R3134 (18k) looks as though it has run hot at some point, but still measures 18k. Any suggestions welcome? |

These CDs have the Digital Audio logo and were designed to be used in stand alone CD recorders. 1. Record something using your 765 onto any CD with the "digital audio" logo. 2.Using your computer, copy that recording onto a TDK-CDRW. 3. Use your 765 to erase the TDK-CDRW. 4. Then use the 765 to try to record onto the TDK-CDRW ... it worked for me and I use them all the time on my 785. |

New member Username: JustonetimePost Number: 1 Registered: Oct-10 | Hi All, I just went through more than I think I should of had to, in order to use my Philips CDR770 stand alone recorder again after a few years, but here it is. In order to get this thing to work, the cdr must be an audio one with the "compact disc digital audio" symbol on it, and be "up to 32X" and 700MB or else it yields an OPC error when setting up to record. Most stores all seem to be carrying only Memorex and Sony around here which won't work as they're too fast at 52X or say music vs the above. I found that the Maxell brand works perfectly and was on sale at Walgreens to boot with 30 discs for $8.99. I am going to buy a pile more when I go out again in case they change the product and we're hosed. Hope this helps other googlers with Philips machines. I was pretty peeved after driving around looking and found Walgreens as a last resort. Cheers, Dave |

It's been over a year and a half since i've tried. Well, i took justonetime's advice and went to Walgreen's and bought some Maxell 80 CD-R s. Popped one in,fired up the old 765 and they worked PERFECTLY! Wow...to think all this time i thought there was no solution. I feel like i have my old 765 back. I should have known though.....In the early days of using my 765, i used Maxell CD-R music 74. They always worked but eventually thay stopped making them. I also TDK CD-RW 80 s and they work just fine. thanks again for this forum and advice |

The OCP passes sometimes, recording commences and is stopped after 1-2 seconds, the track is not written to TOC. Inbetween i have also a second CDR 760 which reacts the same way, so i guess it's the discs who are are at fault.  |

When I start playing the audio CD in PLAYBACK deck (does not matter whether Original CD or burned Audio CD on this machine). Deck started playing fast and fine but still plays about 6-7 songs and then begins to sound skipping and then playback stops and the device goes into STOP mode (the display shows the number of tracks and total CD time) RECORD/PLAYBACK deck works very fine. I cleaned and greased all moving parts in deck drive but no change in activity occurred. next I changed the ceramic resonator 12MHz in the logic board under the drive, no change occurred. Do you have any idea anyone ? Is defect the laser lens ? Thanks for any advice. |

Had a problem at 1st with unit stopping recording after a few tracks. Ran a high speed Dubb from a prerecorded cd to a TDK cd-r. It seemed to do the trick. Tried a regular recording on a TDK cd-r and it worked fine. My unit was bought in 1999. Started not reading Maxell cd-r s awhile back. |

This problem is caused by a tired laser. There is only one solution to this problem : replace the laser unit and alignment REC end ERASE current for new laser (this procedure required the special Philips alignment machine). This service action is very expensive. Therefore, I bought another piece of CD Recorder CDR-775 (CD mechanism and laser is the same with CDR-600) in TOP condition. Now I recording on CD-RW Maxell discs witout any problems. (initializing, recording, finalizing and erase the disc) |

New member Username: MmarshallPost Number: 1 Registered: Aug-19 | I own a Philips Audio CD Recorder, CDR 785 (circa 2000) for which blank music CD's are no longer available in stores. So, I bought 3 boxes from Amazon of what seemed to be the kind I'd used in the past: "Sony CD-R Music Compact Disc Digital Audio Recordable 700 Mb/Mo 80 min". However, when trying to use these blank discs in the CDR tray, the recorder won't initialize the disc, with the display reading "INSERT DISC". This happened with all 15 discs in a box. To test if the machine was at fault, I then inserted a blank Philips CD-R audio "for music recording only" disc which the machine accepted for recording, the display reading 'INITIALIZING". Have the Sony discs changed somehow? Is there another brand of discs besides Sony which I should be using? Your thoughts, please. Thanks for any help you can provide. |
