Me again, just didn't want to continue my last thread. I'd like to see what's good for floorstanding speakers, as they don't need stands. They'll also fit better in my room, compared to bookshelves. Thanks a ton, Alex.

I'd say the Mordaunt Short MS914 they have for $350 are likely very good as well, but I've never heard them. They're cheap enough where I'd take a chance.

If you like silver, STO is selling a pair of those same Wharfedales on eBay for $50 less than the Cherry... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem%26item%3D160419255707

These have a decent amount of engineering behind them.

Alex, where are you located ?
What city...
Maybe I can recommend something in the craiglist if you want to save on shipping and get a good deal on speakers...

If you choose wisely, you will get significant upgrade from your present system - and if you don't mind used... You will end up with more quality.

I live in Maine.

Thanks for the links guys. Do you think I'd be better off with $300 floorstanders or $200 bookshelves? OR $300 bookshelves? But no stands, on a shelf. I already know what I'd get for bookshelves though!

BUY THESE NOW...

They are a steal at that price, ever better if you can negotiate a few bucks off the asking price (I'd offer him $175, firm).

Dunno if they'd be better than the Betas or Wharfies, but they're a good speaker. Especially if you could get them for $225-$250.

This guy has a ton of stuff too. The B&W DM602s as well as the Monitor Audio speakers he's got would be worth inquiring about, though I don't know if they'd fit in your price range. Maybe the receiver in the ad, too?

Personally I think that the Diamond 9.4's represent the best value of the bunch. IMO the Infinity Beta's are as bland as can be. The Cambridge speakers may be good but with the Wharfedale's you get a new speaker complete with warranty for the price of used...I personally know of no better value at the price for a dynamic floorstander.

The Wharfedales are a great value & speaker, and warranties are a good thing, but I could not disagree more about the Betas (But you know that already Art). Read the reviews for yourself kid, there is scarcely a bad word to be uttered about them anywhere.

There's scarcely a bad thing about The Musical Fidelity V-DAC too, but that thing sucks. Dull, bland, and just flat out not fun in any way.

Audioreview.com is a very poor source of information about a product. It's fun to read the reviews but that's about it.

While that may be true about reviews in general, it has nothing to do with the Betas.

Your best bet is to see if you can listen to them for yourself, instead of watching this discussion go off on some boring tangent.

I love the Betas (still own a pair of 20s), Art didn't and sold his off.

HT and AV mags aren't much more impressive unless you are looking to buy a HT, and even then you have to look at the credibility of the source. The Perfect Vision had a bit more than average credibility due it's lineage, but even then....

Chris, didn't mean to rattle your chain (hope you know that) but I have to say it as I heard it and the Beta 20's still rate as one of the worst speakers I've had in my listening room. There wasn't anything interesting about their sound, dead as a doornail (and no that isn't another way of saying neutral).

In the end the only opinion which matters is your own Alex, not mine, not Art's, and not some random reviewer, professional or otherwise; I suggest you listen to the Betas if you can, and decide for yourself.

I value Art's opinion, as he has much more experience than I do in this hobby, but I have & will continue to disagree with him on this matter. My Beta 20s excelled at whatever I threw at them, in multiple configurations, and in several rooms. Today they sit in my closet, replaced by the Wharfedale EVO2-10, but I hope to someday find suitable situation to once again enjoy them.

Chris is right, the only opinion that really matters here is yours, Alex. Get out and do some listening. Best way to know what suits you.

Have a listen to this one, Alex.

It's an upscale piece that is in your budget.

Good thing about Craiglist is that you can listen to them before buying.

With all due respect, our young friend Alex is 15 & isn't swimming in cash, I suspect $300 might be quite a stretch for him, so $400 might be out of the question.

Hahahaha, thanks Chris.

And thanks Art, too. I'm gonna have to do some listening before I get any more into this.

Any chance of getting a ride to some places to listen to stuff?

That's the real way to tell. You also may go down a few paths which are dead end. Some speakers may sound great at a guys house, but after you get 'em home, may not work for you. Or work, than you decide you don't like them, after all.

That kind of thing happens all the time and some people have made a stereo career out of swapping equipment around......
