After some sage advice.. i decided against spending $6-800 on floorstanding speakers (a lot of $ for me)..

i know many people have posted similar questions and the responses typically suggest the buyer go out a audition the speaker. this is not an option for me.

first impressions, quick answer, in your opinion.. what is the best option for me at the $300 price point. 50/50 movie/music.

Based on research. My initial thoughts..

Polk Audio Monitor 60
Wharfedale Diamond 9.4
Jamo E770

Other options..

KEF Cresta 3 2-way Floorstanding Speakers Pair Black
Polk Audio TSi300 Floorstanding Speaker
Mordaunt-Short MS914 Floorstanding Speakers
Athena LS-300B Floorstanding Speaker
Boston Acoustics HS 460

Audio Advisor has the Energy C300 towers for $260 per pair ($129 each).

I'd research those as well as the others.

An impossible question to answer without knowing your listening preferences and associated gear. But, given that you're likely driving these speakers with similarly priced electronics, beware of inefficient speakers. One option to look at right at the $300 mark is the Tekton 4.5's. Silly good for the money, but the presentation is quite different than Polk, Wharfedale, or Jamo.

178 posts of Quinn recommending and defending Ascend.

And nothing else. Its been a while, but I'm glad to see nothing's changed.

IMO nothing you've mentioned will sound as good as; http://www.creativesound.ca/details.php?model=FR125SRKITP1

A very simple single driver system with excellent sound, high on the value for the dollar scale. You can find more information regarding this design here; http://www.creativesound.ca/ (bottom of the page)

and here;

The FR125S driver is the full range version of the main driver (the WR125S) found in the Ling. After the FR version became available the Ling was redesigned into a single driver system using the newer driver. The characteristics described in the review are, however, what you can expect from the FR125S system. Highly recommended as a first time out system as you begin to feel you way around the high end it is a speaker which will allow you plenty of room to grow.

I don't know what's going on with Tim. The last time I heard from him was he was dropping out of trying to get a full time speaker business going and he had gone back to custom speaker design work. He still posts on the DIY forums but my impression is he is now operating as a serious hobbyist with a small but dedicated following who buy his products as custom designed one off's. I doubt he is doing any real business with the single driver Ling since it is being sold as a kit by a few other websites. Really, with the introduction of the full range driver there's not much "design" employed in putting the driver in a cabinet and possibly adding a small baffle step compensation network. Apparently Tim still offers the two way Ling through his personal website. Tim had lost his cabinet maker and his production costs were going to rise significantly so it appears he decided to head in another direction.

If you don't want to go down the DIY route, the Infinity Primus Line are dollar for dollar the best speakers on the market IMHO.

A pair of P362 will cost you $300, and would be hard pressed to match for twice that amount...if not more.

Into, yes; they are very good, but I don't currently have a place for them. I have had them in storage for a while, and my situation has not changed, so they will be sold off soon, as will my Infinity Beta 20 (which are still in the house), If you're interested, PM me.

I might also sell off my HK/Infinty rig & some other miscellaneous gear I've accumulated.
