Michael Jackson - This Is It

A friend saw the movie and thought the soundtrack was excellent. He said the execution was near perfect.

M - 3.8
S - 4.7

Susan Boyle - I Dreamed A Dream

M - 2.5
S - 3.0

Her now famous Wild Horses came across a bit flat as did most all of the tracks. I think whomever produced this did not understand dynamics and synergy. The concept was good but not enough was done with it. Almost like it was a rush to market job or a decision was made to be ultra conservative with her performances.

Do Make Say Think - Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn

Saw them last night at The Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge MA......excellent show. This is probably the best venue I've been to....good food, friendly people, great atmosphere and acoustics, and most importantly amazing band. You guys should check them out if you don't know of them. They primarily play post rock but there are jazz, classical, and folk influences in their music. I'm sure most of you would appreciate what they do.

It was different for me, Art.
The quality of the recording and the presentation of the group is very good.

The individual talents are amazing!

I am trying to expand my music a bit, and I figgur the best way is to start with the best quality, it seems to work.

Any Krauss dvd's tpo look for?

I like to look at her too...

I have and enjoy the Ken Burns set. It has been justifiably criticized for not giving enough time or deference to the modern or avante garde school in jazz. Not enough attention, and what attention there is from the Marsalis camp is negative.

A whole disc should have been dedicated to great masters such as Ornette Coleman, late John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and and on and on. Also discounted were the great jazz masters who took the genre a different direction relative to electric insruments and fusion such as Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul and so on.

Where is the chapter on the great soul jazz artists such as Stanley Turrentine and Lou Donaldson.

The series owes it's greatest debt to swing and it's more direct derivatives such as Bop, Hard Bop and Post Bop, the latter genre of which the Marsalis boys have been masters of until the last decade when Wynton has gone all out neo-traditionalist and appears to be trying his hand at Ellingtonian style large scale compositions on a regular basis. I still enjoy the Marsalis boys but Ken Burns relied to heavily on Wynton and that leaves his series coming up a bit short as a complete historical document relative to jazz.

Thanks for your comments Art, and I couldn't agree more.

This'll be the third run-through of this series for me, and each time I find more things to criticize.

Chief among them is the seemingly endless homage to Louis Armstrong. I certainly don't want to belittle his power and influence. (I remember reading a Playboy interview with Miles many years ago in which he gave Armstrong credit for everything concerning jazz trumpet playing.) But still, less time on him and the likes of Benny Goodman and more (any) time on stuff after 1960 would be nice. After all, it was the stuff that happened after 1960 that got me hooked on the music in the first place. I'm old enough to remember the buzz created by the release of albums like Free Jazz and A Love Supreme, not to mention many others.

I'm not sure that Marsalis should shoulder all the blame for the way Jazz turned out. Every time one of those discs is played, you are reminded of how many benevolent organizations funded this project. I'm sure few of those would suffer anything that smacks of controversy on their dime. That, and PBS itself is pretty milk-toast conservative in many ways.

All this said, my life is richer with Ken Burns' Jazz than without it.

I've been enjoying that Gershwin Plays Gershwin: The Piano Rolls CD all day.

Some might say it's missing something intangible, and I can understand that, but the overall simplicity of the performances (?) and the knowledge that this was (more or less) how these American masterpieces were intended to be played, makes for a very entertaining listen.
