Here is something for Kevin, Art, and a couple other members to peruse. I have no idea who is listing these LPs, just something I came across which I thought may draw some interest here.

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/emd/1328929523.html

It is my experience that if someone is selling something on Craigslist that is not local to you that they are willing to ship the item(s) if you are willing to cover the shipping costs.

Saw Bryan Adams live at Massey Hall last week. I don't care what anyone says, Adams is boss.

It was an acoustic show. Only Bryan on guitar and one other person on piano. Some songs had harmonica that was played by Adams as he also played guitar. Solid playing and he sounded the same as he did 20 years ago, and the same way he sounds on his albums.

The man has a lot of catchy and fun songs and one of the best voices ever. I just enjoy the music for what it is. Another plus is that all his albums are well produced.

Speaking with an assistant in a local box music store, one of the largest music retailers in the country. He told me what the biggest selling cd in the country in recent times was/is.

Anyone hazard a guess?

Something by Kanye West is my guess. The only rock record I can think of would be the latest AC/DC album or American Idiot (but I don't think AC/DC outsold Green Day).

MJ's Thriller is the biggest ever, sold something like 100 million and I believe the next closest was 40 million something. Pretty incredible.

Gavin,

The download was scratchy through my DAC. It may be very dynamic but I am not a rock opera fan which is how the segments I listened to came across.

Thanks for the recommendation. I appreciate opportunities to discover new stuff.

The fact that the blank cd outsells all others is an indictment of todays society and technology. I know LP sales have increased in recent years but not in a way that they will be a secure format for the future except maybe for a niche market like SACD. Now, when CD has finally come of age in sound quality we are beginning to kill it off also with downloading and copying. I have to practically beg record store attendants to exchange if I don't like what I buy. Most times it's a no way - because of copying. Unfortunately the stores with the largest ranges where I live don't have listening posts. Don't get me started on this - oops too late :-)

Sorry, I know this isn't exactly the right thread for this rant, so make up for it:

Metallica Bootlegs downloaded for free from their website.

mp3 and not great quality, but the old ones like the one from a club in SF in '83 are a fun listen if you're a fan.

I'm kicking around the idea of paying for a FLAC version of a recent concert.

Also, just got tickets to see them live in Madison Square Garden in November. Haven't seen them since the 4 hour marathon session concerts they did back in '92.

Harry Connick Jr. - Come By Me

Interrestingly enough, he conducts the big band and orchestra himself and does it live, one take, on this album. Only the vocals are dubbed in after and as he explains, that's only because he "hasn't figured out a way to sing and conduct at the same time, yet".

Bruce Cockburn - Slice O Life: Live Solo [Live] - This is a rare treat. His abilities as a poet, storyteller, singer, and virtuoso guitarist are all fully on display. And the recording quality is excellent. A must have.

Boz Scaggs - Speak Low - I was just floored with this disk. His work on this disk is flawless, and his voice never sounded better. Great sonics as well. If your system has some midrange magic, prepare to be melted.
