Hey all,
I recently purchased a Marantz 2230 receiver, and I am running a turntable through it, and would like some opinions on good vintage speakers that would pair well with the 2230. Budget is around $300 - $500 total, I listen to mostly rock and pop, and not at crazy high levels. I have thought about JBL L100's, Klipsch, or maybe KEF's (saw some 105's in great condition on craigslist for $300). I am currently running a pair of Marantz P-1230 that I got for free, but they are less than stellar. I know that this price range and receiver won't offer true reference quality sound, I just want a system that I can crank Back In Black on and get tight bass, good clarity and a good sound stage.

Thanks for any advice!

btw-The Marantz is 30wpc

Are you married to the whole vintage thing, or might you be interested in some current speakers?

Not married to the vintage thing, just like the look. The most important thing is sound.

All of these speakers are excellent values in the sub-$400 floorstanding category; subjectivly, I'd rank them in the following order:

Kef iQ5

Wharfedale Diamond 9.4

Infinity Primus P362 (routinely sell at auction for less than $100 each)

Given your receiver, I think the Kefs and Wharfedales are not a good option as they are harder to drive, so the Infinities will be the easiest to drive, and are probably a good match.

If you can find them get some Norman Laboratories speakers. Doesn't matter which model. They sound excellent and don't require a lot of power. They were made from th 80's to mid 90's in Oklahoma. Have 2 pair's and love them.
