I was extremely bored and decided to make a speaker driver, even if it was of bad quality. It is true this is not my only post of this..but I thought it would be better here in this section.

It was quite fun to make, actually.

Materials

I took some magnet wire, tape, a bowl, a magnet salvaged from a cheap speaker, and some cellophane and put it together into a speaker driver.

Making It

First, I coiled the wire around an aerosol can and taped it up tightly. Then I measured the DC resistance at 1.3-ohm (1.6-ohm nominal).

Next, I placed the magnet in the center of the bowl. It is not optimally placed and so I lost some efficiency.

I then stretched cellophane over the bowl. I knew how tight it was changed parameters like Fs, Cms, and others (suspension related). Finally, it was wrapped so that it was just tight enough to be minimal of wrinkles and to hold the voice coil without sagging. There's some excess on the sides.

Next, the coil was placed in the center of the cellophane and I connected wires to it for hooking to an amplifier.

Here's the end result.

Upload

Yes, it's definitely not very good, but it was fun. The magnet needs to be a bit closer to the coil.

I can get it to move a bit with about 5 amps of input, but I need more amplifier power to make it actually make some noise.

I have a question. How much power does it look like that coil can take?

If the circuit breaker doesn't flip first. I'd get the family and pets out of the house before I tried to get that thing to make sound.

The coil goes inside the gap, Andre.

I know this, but I do not have access to what I need!!!

It actually sounds OK (a bit bass-heavy though) running off of the fringe field of the magnet, but it's very inefficient as you may expect...
