How much wattage can you run daily with a 130 amp alternator?

A friend has a 2001 Tahoe he wants to put some shove in. How much rms wattage can he run without doing charging system upgrades? With exception to a small dry cell battery. 1500 maybe?

1500 could be do-able with a good battery. no battery, even 1000 will have him dimming bad. but at 1000w with a batcap 800 he'll be fine, I've done it.

you'll need some kind of battery or something. or atleast a big 3 upgrade, i dont think that will hold even. a good option would be big 3 and a batcap if your limited on space

on 130 amps I would not go over 1000 watts and that is pushing it especially if you have power windows,locks,heated seats, loaded....

I'm gonna recommend a FI Q or a SI mag to my friend with the Tahoe. They would be good 1000w rms choices, ya think?

its not about the size alt.. 2 different cars with the same 150 amp alt and same audio equipment..

maybe ok in 1, but xmas tree lights on the other..

if your engine, ecm, car accersories (power everything) requires more power, that means you have less power for your system to operate.
bigger engines also use more power, for the ignition system, and also requries more cranking amps from batt, to even turn over for a start.

I also dont see geting a full 1000rms off a factory alt and batt.. maybe more like 750 rms..
lol

exactly^ depends on the loadedness if thats a word lol of your car, and engine size. If you have headlights,fog lights,driving lights, aftermarket accessories that take up power. I am sure some of you have run 1500 watts on 100 amp alts but I can assure you they were not powered properly, and neither was your car.

Using GW's formula;

For 1500 watts you would need XXX amount of leftover amps for your system.

1500 watts divided by 12 volts (at idle because it is safer this way instead of 13.8 or 14.4) = 125 amps.
1500 / 12 = 125

Now multiply 125 amps by 1.2 (efficiency factor) for class D amps or 1.4 for class A/B amps.
125 X 1.2 = 150 class D
125 X 1.4 = 175 class A/B

Now add 10 amps for buffer room.
150 + 10 = 160 class D
175 + 10 = 185 class A/B

Now add your cars total amperage operating load to the numbers above to see what you need for a 1500 watt system.

"how do u get ur cars total amperage operating load?"

add up all the fuses in the fuse box inside and up under the hood. that will give you a idea. not all accessories will be working at the same time, but important stuff in the engine, just add up that fuse box.

Add all the fuses together.
Well maybe not all, but most of the significant ones. The ones you use on a constant basis. Here is what I would consider;

Charge =
A/c =
Heater =
Ignition =
Brake =
Lights exterior =
Lights interior =
Turn signals/hazzards =
Winshield wipers
Defrost =
Cigarette lighter =
Other charging outlets =
Radio =
Engine selinoids/misc operating fuses (?) =
I may have left out a few here, but go and see for yourself what your car has that it absolutely requires to operate and add them up. This is just a list I made up from scratch. :-)

If Applicable

Power antannae =
Power windows =
Power seats =
Heated seats =
Power doorlocks =
Power sun/moon roof =

Other misc;

Other misc audio/video equipment such as DVD, EQ, X-over, etc...

Now, you may not be using all this stuff all at once, so you may not need to add everything all together. Thats why a lot of people claim that they can run a 1000 watt system on an 80 amp alt and not have any problems. Its because they are usung power from what was designed to be used elsewhere, but since not all the stuff is operating all at once, they get to operate their audio system without havin to get a HO alt.
