How to charge a capacitor

how do you charge a capcitor if you dont have any wire witha bulb on it like they show you in the instructions ans what actually happens if you dont charge it before you hook it up

What kind of cap is it because I have a digital boss cap and it says to charge it with a bulb but did not come with it so I just installed it and found out it did it automaticaly when you hook it up!!!

i have a voodoo 1.2 crome mount capacitor

Use any 12v light bulb to charge the capacitor. Once it's fully charged, the light will go out.
If you don't charge it first, then you will get a big spark. Big enough to burn or take chunks out of wires/connectors.
