Gold Member Username: My_rantzAustralia Post Number: 1319 Registered: Nov-05 | "SACD Decoding" The answer was under your nose all along. It's a Sony. |
Platinum Member Username: Jan_b_vigneDallas, TX Post Number: 10171 Registered: May-04 | . If that's the case, this, http://raq4.buydonlin.com/p-DVPNC85H.html, says it is a SACD player. Gee, why couldn't polkyadayada have hit a search button? |
Gold Member Username: John_sColumbus, Ohio US Post Number: 1469 Registered: Feb-04 | Jan that site appears to be incorrect. This player does not have multi-channel analog outputs. Also the owners manual (p.8) states that it will not play the "HD layer on Super Audio CDs" |
Platinum Member Username: Jan_b_vigneDallas, TX Post Number: 10173 Registered: May-04 | . "HD" layer on SACD? Didn't know there was one? I think terminology is messing with me. We are not talking "HD' as in HDCD, are we? This player won't play the "HiDef" layer of SCAD. It will only tell you another layer is there, but it won't let you hear it. Therefore, "SACD Decoding". "We decoded it, now go spend more money if you want to hear it!" Sheeeesh! . |

Gold Member Username: NuckPost Number: 6650 Registered: Dec-04 | PV, WHO SOLD THE TICKET? Ask them? You bought a ticket without knowing the prize? Do you bid on a car knowing it has 4 wheels and an engine? If you did not buy a ticket and it fell into your lap, then donate it, whatever IT is. To a church group, a woman's shelter or another charity, sight unseen. Greater rewards than a non-descript piece that you probably do not need, let alone cannot name. And throw in some old cd's from friends and family. |
Gold Member Username: John_sColumbus, Ohio US Post Number: 1471 Registered: Feb-04 | "HD layer on Super Audio CDs" I take that to mean it will play only the Red Book layer present on most SACDs. I don't know where PolK got the specs on this player, but they didn't come from Sony. |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzAustralia Post Number: 1324 Registered: Nov-05 | John S - click on specifations on this page and it states SACD decoding. I can't see any SACD badge on the player and yes, there is not 5.1 outputs evident. Gold Member Username: John_sColumbus, Ohio US Post Number: 1475 Registered: Feb-04 | Curious. SonyStyleUSA does not mention SACD. http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_Display ProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=DVPNC85H%2fB&Dept=tvvideo&CategoryName=hav_D VD_DVDPlayers |
Platinum Member Username: Jan_b_vigneDallas, TX Post Number: 10177 Registered: May-04 | . Stick a SACD in the player and see if the front panel display lights up for SACD playback. Even if the player won't play the SACD layer, there should be a two channel CD layer it will track. |
Gold Member Username: NuckPost Number: 6689 Registered: Dec-04 | Give the player to charity, Polk, ya cheap bastage! Keep the tv. |

That's what I meant by
|
Platinum Member Username: Jan_b_vigneDallas, TX Post Number: 10182 Registered: May-04 | . OK, but that layer is not considered "HD". |
Gold Member Username: John_sColumbus, Ohio US Post Number: 1482 Registered: Feb-04 | The full quote is: "Also the owners manual (p.8) states that it will not play the "HD layer on Super Audio CDs" and my response is: "I take that to mean it will play only the Red Book layer present on most SACDs." |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzAustralia Post Number: 1326 Registered: Nov-05 | I would take that the same way John. The HD layers are the High Definition layers so it in fact it doesn't play SACDs. So why do the specs state SACD decoding? A marketing ploy by Sony perhaps? |
Gold Member Username: John_sColumbus, Ohio US Post Number: 1485 Registered: Feb-04 | "A marketing ploy by Sony perhaps?" If you can access the SonyStyleUSA site address I posted above you will see that there is no mention of SACD on the specs list. That it would say "SACD Decoding" on the Canadian site is simply a mistake, imo. Most likely a case of miscommunication beween the marketing and engineering departments. What is suprising is that it hasn't been corrected yet. Maybe it shows that most people don't read or care about the details, and that SACD is of little importance to most people anyway. |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzAustralia Post Number: 1327 Registered: Nov-05 | Important enough for them to add SACD decoding to the new playstation John (why is the question), but otherwise I agree with you. Cheers M.R. |
Gold Member Username: John_sColumbus, Ohio US Post Number: 1493 Registered: Feb-04 | You bring up an interesting point M.R. I understand Sony's Playstation 3 will play SACD not through a set of analog line outputs (it has none), but rather via its HDMI output. (HDMI has supported SACD since Version 1.2 in Aug. 2005.) I thought this was strange as I always thought Sony et.al. was paranoid about outputting SACD in digital form because of possible piracy. Thus all these players with multi-analog line outputs. And all this in spite of SACD's PSP watermark. In any case I agree M.R., just how many PS3 owners will be interested in playing SACDs is a good question. Plus, how many of them have receiver-pre/pros equipped with HDMI 1.2 inputs to process that signal? |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzAustralia Post Number: 1328 Registered: Nov-05 | Yes, exactly John - possibly none on both counts. Good link, thanks |
