Sony TRV608 to HP DVD Movie Writer to DVD. No success.

I have HI8 home videos that I'm trying to put on DVD via the HP DVD Movie Writer DC 4000 using the supplied HP software and USB cable. I've had NO success. I've burned VHS tapes to DVD, but can't get the Hi8 to work. Any suggestions (probably step-by-step suggestions)? Thank you for reading and helping. JT
