Converting hi8 to vhs - just can't get it right...........

hi - i borrowed a sony camcorder and used an hi8 tape to make a video for a contest that i need to convert to vhs soon - i used the video/audio cables that came w/the camera and hooked up to tv and then later vcr but got snow or whatever was on channel 4 ..i'm going to try one more thing -hooking up the cables directly to the vcr and trying to find an "aux" channel on vcr that will allow me to play through vcr on tv .............that should work right?? i used the old school huge camcorder that holds the vhs tape and recorded my tv as it was playing my video but am not very happy w/that pic if you can imagine :-) any suggestions would be great!! thanks

Your VCR should have phono plugs for both input and output (yellow, white and red). Connect your camcorder to the three marked "In" and your TV to the three marked "Out". Adjust your TV to monitor the VCR. Adjust your VCR for "Aux" or "L1" or similar and you should be monitoring (and able to record) the output from the camcorder.

Picture quality will be as good as your VCR can manage.
