Analogue Capture from VHS-C to DV in PC via Handycam TRV33

I'm trying to capture old footage from VHS-C tapes. I understand the best method is to use the analogue-to-digital HW in my Sony TRV-33E. Problem is I get monochrome video if I use a S-Video cable, or washed-out colour if I use the composite video cable. I'm following the instructions in the manual and using an additional adapter. I've tried 4 different cables and 3 different adapters :-( Surely I must be doing something wrong?
