Hey. I'm pretty new to all the car audio and sub stuff, but I have a general grasp of most concepts. I'm looking around to get a good system without spending a ton of money. I've decided I'm probably going to go with a couple 12" V-Max subs. What would any of you recommend for a reasonably cheap amp that wouldn't sacrifice much sound? Also, I'm a bit in the dark when it comes to distortion ratios and wiring schemes, especially with SVC and DVC stuff. Anyone know of a good reference site for that kind of thing? I'd appreciate it.

the JBL BP 600.1 would run awesome with 2 12" vmax's. thats a great amp at a great price, i wouldnt get anything cheaper than that otherwise its just going to cost you money in the long run.

BP600.1 is getting hard to find.
The MTX 801d is a solid amp.
The Xtant 6001 is a great amp for the money. Also in the same price range. But if you can find a JBL BP 600.1, would suit those subs nicely.

Thanks for the site, CarAudioFNG. Thanks for the other amp suggestions as well. I'll keep my eye out.

Ok. This might seem like a stupid question, but I'm new, and I just want to make sure I don't screw something up. Ok. Say I've got 2 12" V-Max DVC subs powered by a JBL bp 600.1 amp, wired like so: <img>
The amp runs 300w RMS @ 2 Ohms, the subs would run at 300w each and not 150w each, right?

Well, that image didn't work too well. Ok, I'll try again. 300w @2 Ohms, wired in series, would the subs run at 300w each, or 150w each?

theres been some controversy about wether the 12" DVC vmax is a dual 2ohm sub or a dual 4ohm sub..but i think we've cleared it up as being a dual 4ohm sub. this meaning, the JBL BP600.1 could be wired down to a 1ohm load, giving each sub the 300watts desired. follow this pic.Upload

Hmm... I thought it was 2 Ohm. Well, I suppose that simplifies things a bit. Thanks.

it reads dual 2ohm on their site as well as others..however on the spec sheet provided from cerwin vega, it reads as a dual 4ohm sub. kinda wierd i know, but thats the way it goes. that JBL amp will wire down to 1ohm for 300watts a piece (thats the same set up i ordered) but you could also purchase the SVC model of the vmax and wire it to 2ohms, giving you the same amount of power. that will save you a few bucks, wish i figured that all out before i went and bought. goes to show you that you shouldnt get ancy when it comes to car audio...

it reads 2 ohm nominal on thier site, which means when both 4 ohm DVC's are wired that way, you have a 2 ohm load coming out of each sub. (which can then be wired together for a single 1 ohm load).

How would you wire the SVC's to 2 Ohms?
