How do you determine if a high output alternator is needed for a system?

Find out how many amps your stock alternator is.....to power subs like that you need a lot of power. That first amp required about 120amps all by istelf. Most stock amps aren't over that.
What kind of vehicle do you have?

lights dim is the obvious but also think bout the amp fuse rating of 120 amps on that amplifier even if it doesnt reach this (and it wont) and you have a bigger factory alternator that usual like me at 105 amps you still will draw more than your alternator can put out and guess what takes on the rest...your battery which lowers your voltage and lost voltage is lost power and eventually youll have eiteh a dead battery first or a dead alternator (power is determined amps times volts most minus loss of amplifier effieciency so theoretically with 100% effiecincy and that never happens with 14 volts times a theoretical 120 amp draw = 1680 watts rms but most cars with sufficient alternator run 13.8 volts and ive seen big amps draw down to 10 volts now your puttin out 1200 watts= 480 rms watt loss)

I have a 2004 Toyota Solara, with I believe a 100 amp alternator. So this means I need a bigger alternator for any amplifier above 800 watts rms I get unless I want the battery or stock alternator to die out fast?

How about if you put a cap in there. Would you still need a higher output alternator?

mike, if you want to know how many amps your stock alternator is just look for a replacement from a dealer or reliable source and it will say.
