Hi all,
I've been MIA from the car audio world for a bit and not sure what products are better now. My friend just bought a 2003 mazda protege5 and wants to set it up with a system. I'm thinking a 4 ch amp, only replace the front speakers, a mono amp, and 1 or 2 subs. This car has trunk space coupled with the cabin, so it has lots of potential for good sound - 1 sub or 2? Budget is in the $700 range. Prefer head unit with 4V preouts. I'd like recommendations for all the above. Thank you.

Thanks, Joe! So would you also recommend the Fi woofer over the TC-sounds Epic 12"?

I recommend the TC for straight SQ applications, is a 500W sub, it depends which way you are going, the SSD is 1000W hard hitting sub, the TC likely won't take the beating.

It's a girl, I'll have her go with the Fi. Thanks!

Best of luck, get a dual 2 ohm version to impedance match the amp, if you have any further questions including the necessary box designing, let me know.

Will do. Also, how about the 15" Fi? Too much for that car?

The polk db you recommended actually don't fit into that car, will have to go with 5.25" or 5x7 components. Considering we're only going to replace the front stage, should we opt for the larger components?

If you have the airspace for a 15 you may consider it, would need the dimensions of the baggage compartment. Likely you will be left without any space for other use but is in fact about 3dB louder.

I wouldn't go for anything less than 6 1/2" comps, would adapt them, the only thing that can't prevent you from adapting them is mounting depth.. if you don't want to modify the doors then install what you can but will sound sub par. The problem is lack of midbass frequencies, usually it gets worse when combined higher diameter subs.
