Hey all --

I am looking for a new head unit for my 99 Pontiac Bonneville. The steering wheel has controls for the radio and I wanted to see if I could preserve these controls somehow when I buy a new head unit perhaps through the use of an adapter. I went to a couple of stores and looked at some nice JVC and Eclipse units. But when I asked about a possible adapter piece, they looked at me like I was nuts. Then a couple of people even said that I might not even be able to put in a new head unit into the Bonneville because of these controls and that the factory deck is computerized???

Anyways, I just wanted to check if anyone hear knows of an adapter to use the steering wheel controls for a new deck. Thanks :-)

you can change the head unit.
check with www.pac-audio.com for an adapter for steering wheel controls.
The problem is that most steering wheel controls are hard-wired to the head unit whereas aftermarket head units use iR remote controls.
iR requires line of sight so you can't just stick the remote into the steering wheel without relocating the iR eye to a location lined up with the head unit.
It's a lot of work, though not impossible.
