How is a ported enclosure tuned to a certain freq?

How can I tune an eclosure that is already built?

W/ slot port.

I would like to tune to the lowest hertz possible.

The sub is an Rockford Fosgate P3 in its original box.

Here is a link for the specs:

If you want to get the most out of that woofer, either build your own custom enclosure or have someone with experince build one for you. There are a few good guys on this forum who can. What makes a box a certain frequency is the everything about the port. The height, width and length is what tunes it. It is the force of the air coming through a given port that gives you the tuning. Your sub will perorm best at a specific port tuning, at what exact one I'm not sure. If you want deeper lows, I'd say around 32 Hz, if you want the sub to be loud, maybe around 35 - 36 Hz. Someone else can probably suggest a good frequency to go at.

The box that came with this sub is already built to RF specs. I've read the owner's manual before, if im not mistaken the box its tuned to 40 Hz. Is it possible to tune it to around 32 Hz?

If you take the grill things off of the port, and cut more port the same size and bolt it to the front. Any additional wood inside would reduce the volume, giving you even more problems. Don't do that.

The box is only 5/8" mdf, I'd just build a new one. To lower the tuning you have to make the port longer, which just isn't realistic.

Thanks for the info Troy. I guess I'll have to get a new box for it.

Who are the box builders on this forum?

you could always cut back on some port area to get a lower tuning...

For the P3 it would do well in around a 1.75 cuft @ 33hz. I could do it for $125 + shipping.

I calculated the cubic ft. of the original box using the formula HxWxD divided by 1728 and the factory specs for my box provided on the owners manual. I got these results:

15.125" x 19.125" x 16.375" / 1728 = 2.7411600748697...

Does this mean that the box is 2.7 cu. ft. (minus the area displacement of the port and the thickness of the wood)?

If this is true, then if you build me a box that is 1.75 cu. ft. it would be much smaller?

subtract wood thickness and port and sub displacement and then you have volume. its probably right around 2 cubes net.

no offence but you need to make sure you take the largest (od) dimensiond when accounting for the port displacement.

sub displacement is prob .1 or less

No offense taken. Im not a professional like Bassman3. I just know some of the basics and wanted to get an idea of the of the size of my current box vs the one that I might have him build for me.

Thanks for your input. I've learned a bit more now.

To Bassman3: Are you in the US? If I decide to get a custom box from you maybe I can pick it up if your not too far from me.

Great box! I was thinking of going with the slot port for my box, would those aero ports be a better choice? How much did you pay for the box? Was it extra for the double baffle? Extra for aero ports rather than slot?
