With the subs I bought I got two boxes made to spec. But its just the wood and I'm wanting to "spruce it up" but not carpet it. Whats the best thing to do? Paint it?

I used that spray paint with the little specks in it that makes a rough suface and that came out pretty sweet.

on the cut sides of it, it does. But just a couple of coats and it's fine

Herculiner, or paint. I was planning on buying a super thin sheet of plexi-glass for my new box, paint the back side of it the color you want with 2-3 coats. score it the size you need and snap it off then use some 3M spray adhesive to adhere it to the box.

Costs about 40 bucks for a sheet of plexi, and 4 for a can of paint. Use a straight edge and a razor blade to make the edge to snap. It's different anyway- I haven't seen anyone with anything like that. It also covers any blemishes.

I love a good paint job or the plexi thing. It gives the appearance of a nice paint job with a fraction of the effort. Only problem is scratches.
The rough texture spray is great since it's like an undercoat or bed liner depending on the product.

Some custom paint jobs are awesome with glassing and all but I never did like the painted look IMO. Shows too many of the construction flaws/imperfections.

To me carpet has always been the cheapest, most sensible solution from what I've seen in covering up said imperfections and wear and tear of normal use.

One tip I've learned is to spray paint the box black in the areas where you anticipate a seam. (Assuming the carpet is black). That way when and if any seams start to peal back you don't notice it as much. Over time it will happen. On my HT box my cat loves to paw the box right at where a seam is. Over time it shows the wood beneath.

I hate my cat.

I used that spray paint with the specs on my last box. It came out lookin nice but the box is a tad big for the trunk so it got scratched anytime I had to take it out n put it back in. After awhile I got tired of the scratchs n inperfections so I ended up carpeting it, looks dam good now. I always thought suede would look awesome. That herculiner idea would work, that sh!t is tough kinda costly tho.

if its MDF finish i'd think you'd treat it just like you would with double baffle.

Shitt ton of titebond with a few screws..

herculiner would be usually $30 to cover the box and you will have some left over as well

Nope, go to your local automotive store and they should have a quart that you can buy for $29.99 or around there.

I just decided to bolt the two boxes together and found some cheap carpet so I used some spray adhesive and did my beswt with the carpet. I am pretty pleased with the result. All in all it cost me 200 for the subs and boxes 15 for the glue and 10 for the carpetUpload

you can coat the MDF with KILLZ (very heavy paint) or putty it and sand it down. This will give you a surface to work with.
After that, you can use a piano finish acrylic "wet look" black paint, or the Fleckstone paint as noted above, or you can veneer the box with a thin layer of something really nice like a rosewood, to make it look like it's solid rosewood. It's a nice effect if you take the time to edge the seems, like you would when laying Formica on a kitchen counter top.
