I recently bought two 12" alpine type R's(1222D) and an AQ 1200 and I was wondering what gauge wiring to run to the amp and how large of a fuse in the wire I would need, right now I have some 8 gauge with a 150 watt fuse, and I was wondering if I needed to upgrade it? I am new to this so any help would be much appreciated.

You will need at least 4 gauge so yes you have to upgrade.

A 100-125 amp fuse is good for 4 gauge wire.

If you have a 150 amp fuse on 8 gauge wire you're lucky you never had a short, thats way too big.

I was not sure on the fuse size so I just guessed, it was probably less than 150

So a 4 gauge wiring kit will work fine, or would I be better off with 2 gauge? and will it make much of a difference?

Bigger wire is always better and allows for upgrades in the future. But a 4 gauge kit would be just fine. Just make sure ot get a good brand so that it is true 4 gauge. The cheap ones lie.

What are some good brands? So I don't end up getting poorly made wire.

Oh yeah you need 2 dual 4ohm subs to wire down to 1ohm,which is what your AudioQue AQ1200D is stable at.

So change out subs/amp.

Yes,you can run your amp at 2ohm,but why not get 2 dual 4ohm subs and get the most power out of your amp.

2 dual 2ohm.

He is right, I didn't notice that... you bought the wrong subs... if using 2 subs they need to be dual 1 ohm or dual 4 ohm to work with the AQ 1200.

If you use the dual 2s you will only get 1/2 power out of the amp...

Ok so I returned the 2 ohm subs and got the 4 ohm subs, got an amp wiring kit with 120 amp fuse in it, but in the AQ 1200 manual it say that the AQ 1200 comes with 3X40 amp fuses in it, so do I still need the 120 amp fuse in the power wire?

Yes you always need a fuse in the power wire. It does not need to match the amps power, it can be the max current of the wire itself, but if it is the same as the amp it will not hurt it. that fuse in the wire protects the vehicle from shorts if the wire gets overpowered, so your car doesn't burn to the ground.

Look at the fuse and wiring section.

one more question, I have looked at the wiring diagram for the 4 ohm subs down to 1 ohm, and I am kind of confused, with the amp you have two sets of positive and negative speaker outputs, but with the diagram you only use one set of them, do you only use one set and split the wire and run it to both subs, or would you use both of the speaker outputs and run a seperate set to each sub? any help here would be much appreciated, and a picture would be extremly helpfull.

the aq1200d is a mono amp, but its probably internally bridged so it looks like it has 2 channels. Just connect the positive speaker wire to the positive block on the first "channel" and connect the negative speaker wire to the negative block on the opposite "channel" Exactly the same way you would bridge a 2 channel amp to one channel.

I put channel in "" because there isnt really two channels it just looks like it.
