I have a KDC - 5018 head unit, at the back of it is a small black bax type object that gets VERY VERY hot when the head unit has been turned on for a couple of minutes. i am scared it could melt wires it is getting so hot. what is it and is it normal Please help?????

I believe the black box you are talking about is the power transformer for the power to the head unit. This would be normal to get hot. As to how hot yours is getting, you may want to figure out how hot its getting before assesing that its a problem. I don't believe there will be a problem with melting wires, but one suggestion I can make is try to move it into a slightly open area in your dash to allow cooler air to get to it.
