Sub Advice

OK, super noob question here... I have an audiobahn amp putting out 1200w RMS at 2 ohms. Stable to one(@2400w RMS), but don't want to push a lower quality amp that hard. Looking for 2 12's to handle the amp and OF COURSE I'm on a budget. Would like to spend under $200 for each sub. And before you tell me to go to Radioshack or Wal-Mart, I know. I would love to have a $5,000.00 amp and $600.00 subs. Unfortunately, my wife is my accountant.

A pair of Audioque SDC2.5s would be nice on that power. If you wanna go more toward the SQ side of life, you could try to find a pair of the previous version of the Stereo Integrity BMs.

Aren't the SD's rated at only 600w RMS? I am currently running 2 Merlon 12's rated at 800 RMS on one of their 1000w RMS amps. Had to recone one, and only have the amp running at 70% on 2 ohms. Wanted to go with something that can handle more power to run closer to 1000w all of the time. Thanks for the input, those are definitly along the lines of what I am looking for, just don't want to buy new drivers every 6 months.

The SDC2.5's can handle more then 600 watts rms per speaker. If you give the subs a clipped signal then you will be blowing your subs all the time. Watch what you set your gain to. Do not use bass boost! If your system is not loud enough for you then you need to upgrade to more subs more power or try a different box to get more performance.

I don't think Audioque would under-rate their speakers to that degree. Even with this amp at 70%, it's still pushing 840 RMS. I'm not going to put anything less than 1000w RMS rated speaker on it.}

So what kind of amp are you running??? How are you going to run 1000w to each speaker if your amp will only produce 1200w at whatever ohm you are wiring to???

If you are running your audiobahn amp @ 2 ohm, and it does do rated power, then I'd look into RE SE's, RD Classics, BM's like Yanks stated, Diamond Audio D6's, even alpine Type R's?

You might want to add some fiberfill to those boxes, not many subs will work to their full potential in that small of a box before speaker displacement.

Are you running the Audiobahn amp or what? I assume your running it at 2 ohms since you say you didn't want to run it at 1 ohm. If it does 1200 @ 2 ohms (which is probably an inflated number) then the SD2.5s would be good. Since you are using a sealed box then I wouldn't go with the AQs anymore.

Tell us the amp you are using and the exact specs.

Not using it right now. Have a "merlon" brand. Different name on it but it's made by merlon. So, being a noob, I think I assumed that each speaker on a channel gets the full output. Or is it split between the speakers? Ie, 1200w to 2 speakers=600w to each?

I also have access to a Kicker KX1200.1
Would the KX give me better performance?

If your amp really puts out 1200 watts rms at 2 ohm then and you have 2 subs each sub will be receiving 600 watts rms. Some people have put up to 1000

I think the KX1200.1 would be a nice step up from the audiobahn.

Oh God yes. The KX is a much better amp. If you can use the KX instead, then please do it.

But yes, if the amp is rated at 1200rms @ 2 ohms (like the A-bahn), then each sub would receive 600rms. Now, if the specs were 400rms x 2 @ 2 ohms (just a random power figure), then each sub would receive 400rms.

So, to run it to 1 ohm, I need 2 ohm DVC subs, right?

Nope. To run that amp at 1 ohm, you will need 2 dual 4 ohm subs or two dual 1 ohm subs.

PLEASE do not run that audiobahn amp!!! I ran it at 1ohm to my tw0 10 w7 and they ate that amp up!!! The jl 1000/1 amp pushed out more than the audiobahn amp that is rated at 2400 watts at 1ohm. get a us amp, or audioque amp and u will be happy. I personally run the mmats 3500.1d amp and love it!!!!
