Connecting my CD PLAYER direclty to the car Amplifier

I have a car amplifier and a discman. I connected the discman directly to the car amplifier through the head phones jack (and it seems to work right, I can change the volume perfectly, I have to also add that the discman doesn't have a line out). I want to know if this is right or it can burn it (if this is the case, what should I do?).
Also, what should I get to control the Treble, Bass, Balance, etc? An Equalizer?
