when i am looking at the specs i see this. what does it mean? seems like the higher the number the louder the sub is for the watts in can handle or something... what does the Sensitivity mean????

It has to do with a subs output at a givin distance. It can also be used as an efficiency reference.

Example- A sub with a 90% efficiency can theoretically be louder than a sub with an 85% efficiency rating on the same power, but there is so many more variables you must consider that you cannot rely on this spec alone, but can help guide you if you know what your looking for.

Google it, you will learn much more. I might be entirely correct, but it's the way I understood it.

In theory, the higher the number, the louder the sub will be than one with a lower number on the same amount of power.

In reality, box and vehicle come into play and can change things.

Alot of companies lie or use an alternate way of calculating this spec.
112+10log(9.64*10^(-10)*Fs^3*Vas/Qes)
this will give you the true 1w/1m SPL of a driver.

And just a rule of thumb if you are planning on running the sub in a small sealed box you don't want an efficient driver. ~1-3 cubes sealed takes out the advantage of an efficient driver. The output of say a 84db @1w/1m will beat a driver with say 97db in a 1 cu ft sealed enclosure on the same power.

Here's a pretty good little discussion on sensitivity/efficiency going on right now over on SSA.

The sensitivity of a speaker determines how efficient the speaker is. This is a website that should be read by all who wish to have car audio systems.

http://www.bcae1.com/

Number 31. speakers should tell you all that you want to know.

"BL is determined by the flux density (B) in the magnetic gap and the length (L) of voice coil wire in the gap. A higher BL will generally mean a speaker will have a higher relative sensitivity (efficiency). This doesn't necessarily mean that all speakers with a higher BL will produce a higher SPL. Often speakers with very high BLs have a smaller Xmax. " FTW
